Following a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular biology with Dr. Yu completed his AB in Philosophy and a BS in Biological Sciences at Stanford University, MD and PhD (Immunology) degrees at Duke University, completed Internal Medicine residency at UCSF, clinical and research fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease at MGH, and is board certified in Cardiovascular Medicine. Paul Yu is Director of the Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) at Massachusetts General Hospital, recipient of the Charles Addison Sanders and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Endowed Chair, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Physician in Cardiovascular Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Yu’s clinical and translational interests including pulmonary vascular disease, cardiovascular rheumatology, and fibrodysplasia ossificans progressivaĭr. A major focus of his laboratory’s work is to discern how BMP/TGF-β signaling achieves spatio-temporal and functional specificity for developmental patterning, and to modulate the tissue-specific consequences of inflammation and injury. Specifically, the laboratory has devised novel models, molecular tools, and pharmacologic probes for examining the function of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), activin, growth and differentiation factor (GDF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-b) signaling in cardiovascular and musculoskeletal development and function. Yu’s laboratory studies the role of cytokine growth factor signaling in cardiovascular homeostasis, injury repair, and regeneration. The official awarding by the PCP will be held during the live broadcast of the Virtual Convocation and Awards Cermonies of the PCP 51 st Annual Congress on May 2, 2021.Dr. Yu was elected as President of the Global TB Alliance Stakeholders Association and ex-officio Board Member in 2004-2006 and in 2009 was recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Filipino Physicians (TOFP) by the JCI, PhilHealth, DOH, and PCSO.ĭr Yu is currently the Vice Chancellor for Research of the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute and as an internist and pulmonologist, is among the many valiant frontliners in our continuing battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. As Chair of the Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis (PhilCAT) between 2001-2004, PhilCAT focused on building grassroots alliancesĪnd coalitions that contributed greatly toward institutionalizing DOTS TB and consequently, to the achievement of the TB targets of DOH and WHO in 2004 and the Medium Term Development Goals in TB in 2015.įor all of these and more, Dr. Booktopia Bookshop search results for Charles Yu. He strongly and successfully advocated for the Public-Private Mix framework that is the cornerstone of the success of the directly- observed treatment strategy (DOTS) for TB. Yu has really made an indelible mark not only in the country but in the world. ![]() ![]() ![]() In fact, that has been his secret for a successful advocacy in tuberculosis (TB) research where Dr. Building partnerships has always been the expertise of Dr. It is part of a multi-site trial being conducted in the Philippines for a COVID-19 vaccine candidate. Yu is also the principal investigator of an ongoing clinical trial for a new COVID-19 vaccine candidate which is being conducted at DLSMHSI. Charles Yu with Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla during a pre- commissioning ocular of the state-of-the-art molecular laboratory at DLSMHSI where specimens of COVID suspects from all over Cavite are subjected to Rt-PCR testing for SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.ĭr. Today, the laboratory is testing close to a thousand specimens per day, providing real time results that enable the LGUs in Cavite to respond in real time to pocket outbreaks. As the country was grappling with the scarcity of testing laboratories for COVID-19, the Cavite-De La Salle COVID-19 Diagnostic Center (CDCDC) was certified in May 2020 and immediately started testing specimens coming from municipalities and cities all over Cavite, a cornerstone of Cavite’s response to the raging pandemic. Yu’s lifelong career devoted to medical research in various areas – TB, asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), influenza vaccination studies, clinical epidemiology, and now, COVID-19.Īs La Salle’s Vice Chancellor for Research, he led the institution in forging a partnership with the Provincial Government of Cavite to set up the first referral molecular laboratory in Cavite that will conduct Rt-PCR tests for SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This recognition from his fellow Filipino internists at the PCP is a culmination of Dr. Charles Yap Yu was recently recognized by his peers at the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP), as the PCP Exemplar Awardee as Distinguished Researcher of the year 2020-2021. ![]()
